Across the world there is a challenge of innovating schools that are often old-fashioned and rigid. The world is changing rapidly and a lot of students are disengaged and tend to achieve way below their potential but the global expectations for education system are increasingly becoming more ambitious. Because of these reasons and many others, schools and systems must move beyond the familiar and traditional comfort zone. Innovation is essential.

Major shifts in curriculum policy argue for innovative pedagogy. The educational policy strategies in most regions promote the development of skills and knowledge, including the so called ‘21st century skills’. But how to approach innovative pedagogy? There are a variety of approaches toward this. In fact, you can observe some of these approaches already being implemented in JC Economics Tuition in Singapore.

Following are some key approaches to promote and implement innovative pedagogy. Keep in mind that all these approaches can be combined in different ways.

Gamification

Gamification exploits how games can capture the interest of students and provide serious purpose, such as nurturing self-regulation and the skills to handle the unfamiliar and complexity. These innovative pedagogies are built on features of games, such as progressive challenge, participation, goals and badges, rapid feedback, as well as the human elements of competition, collaboration, identities, and narratives.

Blended Learning

Blended learning is another excellent way to approach and implement innovative pedagogy. It rethinks established sequencing and routines of student work and teaching in order to improve understanding. Blended learning relies on digital resources and aims to be coherent and engaging for leaners. It also aims to reduce routine tasks so that the access to teacher expertise is optimized.

Computational Thinking

Computational thinking develops problem-solving. In this approach, students are taught and encouraged to look at challenges as computer would and use technology to resolve those challenges. The key elements of computational thinking include pattern identification, abstraction, algorithms, decomposition, and logical reasoning – using techniques such as search strategies, debugging, model checking, parallel processing, and approximate solutions. Computational thinking envisions coding and programming as new forms of literacy. This is one of the key approaches towards innovative pedagogy that most tuition centers across the globe strive to implement.

Embodied Learning

Embodied learning looks beyond the content and cognitive acquisition to connect the social, emotional, artistic, and the physical. Embodied learning promotes knowledge acquisition via the natural tendencies of the young toward expression and creativity. It encourages the development of risk-taking, sensitivity, curiosity, and thinking in multiple perspectives and metaphors.

Experiential Learning

Experimental learning is another great approach to innovative pedagogy that occurs through active inquiry, reflection, and experience. Its components are concrete experiences that extend the active experimentation, conceptualization, reflective observation, and understanding. Scaffolding and guidance play important roles. Pedagogies in this approach include service learning, outdoor learning, education for sustainable development, and inquiry-based learning.

Discussion-Based Teaching

Discussion-based teaching aims to develop critical capacities and cultural distance. Critical literacies put knowledge in its different authorial, cultural, and political contexts and deconstruct narratives. Class discussion becomes the key in dominant language and questioning ideas. This approach to innovative pedagogy uses life experiences of students to creative meaningful class activities as well as constructive critique to encourage students to extend their horizons and create distance from received knowledge.
